Upcoming Construction and Infrastructure Projects in Bhutan: A Look Ahead to 2025

Bhutan is poised for significant infrastructure development in 2025, with several major projects set to commence or reach completion.

 

Hydropower Projects:

Kholongchhu Hydropower Project: This 600 MW project is scheduled to begin in September 2024, with an expected completion by March 2029.

Dorjilung Hydropower Project: Slated to start in October 2025, this 1,125 MW project aims for completion by October 2031.

Small Hydropower Projects: Three projects—54 MW Burgangchhu, 32 MW Yungichhu, and 18 MW Suchhu—are under construction, with commissioning planned between 2024 and 2025.

 

Industrial Developments:

Ferrosilicon Plants in Norbugang: Six new plants are under construction in Samtse, expected to be operational by 2025, contributing to Bhutan’s industrial growth.

500 MW Bitcoin Mining Data Center: Located in Jigmeling Industrial Park, this facility is under construction and will commence operations in phases starting mid-2025.

 

Renewable Energy:

Sephu Solar Power Plant: Bhutan’s first utility-scale solar farm, with an enhanced capacity of 22.38 MW, is under construction in Wangdue Phodrang and is expected to be completed by March 2025.

 

These projects underscore Bhutan’s commitment to expanding its energy infrastructure and industrial capabilities, presenting significant opportunities for growth and development in the coming years.
